If "just kidding" were an acceptable disclaimer, people would use that as an excuse for virtually every attempt to post offensive/insensitive material in violation of our rules of conduct.

The very first rule reads as follows:

Derogatory comments regarding race, ethnic background, language, gender, sexual orientation or religion are strictly prohibited. The use of slurs and/or hate speech will result in immediate and permanent banishment from the community without warning.

We're concerned less with intent than effect. The effect of posting racially derogatory comments is that our forums are perceived as a less welcoming place. That's unacceptable.
Think about it: if the forums were filled with comments that deprecated your race, ethnicity, or gender, for example, would you feel welcome here? Even if followed with "just kidding," if we're immersed in an environment in which it's considered acceptable to belittle people of our background, for many of us the end result is that we feel disrespected, diminished, and unwanted. The rules call for permanent bans in these situations to ensure that our forums remain as welcoming as possible for our fellow community members of all backgrounds and experiences.

    Peace.
